Rep. Kirkpatrick Updates Greater Arizonans On Her Fight To Defend Second Amendment Rights In Tele-Town Hall

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Constitution Guns

Representative Ann Kirkpatrick talked about her work to defeat the challenges to the Second Amendment in Washington and promised to keep defending our rights in her "Ask Ann" tele-town hall on Tuesday night. More than 3,500 Arizonans joined her for the conversation, in which she reviewed several key legislative victories for the right to keep and bear arms and discussed what must be done next.

Rep. Kirkpatrick has a long track record of successfully fighting the White House and Congressional leadership to safeguard the Second Amendment. Last March, the Congresswoman sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder opposing any reinstatement of the so-called "assault weapons" ban. She later helped push through a National Rifle Association- and Gun Owners of America-endorsed amendment to strengthen protections for law-abiding gun owners in national parks.

Rep. Kirkpatrick has also been working to make progress on bills to allow people to travel with their firearms more easily and to let Veterans keep weapons they found serving abroad as souvenirs of their service.

"I am not going to allow Washington to ignore the values of Arizonans and the traditions of four generations of my family in District One, and I am proud to be pushing back against the federal government to stop our Constitutional rights from being infringed," said Rep. Kirkpatrick. "Every time the anti-gun rights groups propose legislation that restricts our freedoms, I am going to make sure they know millions of Americans will fight them every inch of the way."

In response to questions from constituents, the Congresswoman discussed the status of several efforts to burden Second Amendment rights and reviewed McDonald v. Chicago, an upcoming Supreme Court case that could put a stop to local governments trying to get around the Constitution. Rep. Kirkpatrick also told folks about her personal history with guns.

"Like so many folks who grew up in this state, my dad taught me how to shoot as a kid," said Rep. Kirkpatrick. "Some of my favorite childhood memories come from hunting trips with him in the White Mountains where I was raised, and I inherited my rifle and my shotgun from him.

"My dad also taught me the importance of self-reliance, and to defend my rights tirelessly against anyone trying to take them away. I am always sure to keep that with me as I stand for this cause in Congress."

This was the seventh conversation in the "Ask Ann" tele-town hall series. The Congresswoman will next hold a tele-town hall on creating jobs and protecting Greater Arizona's natural resources on Tuesday, May 18th at 5:20pm.

Those who could not participate in Tuesday's event will be able to listen to a recording on Rep. Kirkpatrick's website at www.kirkpatrick.house.gov within the next few days.
